Education, the Economy, and Technology: Did You Know?
A co-worker recently shared with me this YouTube video:
Maybe you’ve already seen this clip (more than 3.8 million folks have viewed it … I admit to being a bit behind the times, technologically speaking). If you haven’t, then I encourage you to check it out.
I found the following facts very interesting (and very relevant to the discussions we’ve had on this blog):
- The top 10 in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004.
- We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist using technologies that haven’t been invented in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet.
- The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that today’s learner will have 10-14 jobs by the age of 38.
- 1 in 4 workers has been with their current employer less than a year. 1 in 2 have been there less than five years.
I was curious about the origin of this video clip, and so I Googled the authors’ names (Karl Fisch, Scott McLeod, and Jeff Bronman). It turns out that Karl Fisch is the Director of Technology for Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, and he has his own blog, The Fischbowl, which is also worth checking out.

The Center for American Progress’ Call for a U.S. Office of Consumer Protection in Higher Education

With all this information you would think we’d be in better shape.
This should be a wake up call. People of the U. S. are convinced that they are better educated than the rest of the world. Maybe in a small number, however overall we are behind. This is one video I wish would be released over all means of communication.
Hello all. I just wanted say I had a feeling of this in 2004. It’s funny how things come to past.
Very interesting!
This is a great and knowledgeable video. I had some general idea about most of it, and I believe that technology will be out of this world, in the coming future. I see many young children with the minds of a teenager, and many who have extraordinary talent. The internet will be major device of communicating, from state to state, and country to country. People are already meeting their significant others, online. If you don’t get on board, you will miss the train…
Thank you for the video. Kind of hints about getting up to speed, huh? Haha.
