Graduating Stalled Community College Seniors
President Obama has sent a strong and badly needed message of philosophical and financial support for community colleges. But they, and their students, are still in deep financial trouble in many states whose economic recovery is key to the national economic recovery, including California and Florida.
Research tells us that community colleges and higher education’s private sector are the two places in higher education where marginalized learners are the main focus. This is certainly the case at Kaplan University where students with no college or some college but no degree comprise a majority of our learning force.
It’s time for us all to work together to make sure seniors who are stalled out 2-3 courses short of graduation can actually graduate from their local community college. Why shouldn’t a regionally accredited private sector university like Kaplan provide the needed courses online so that community college seniors can quickly graduate from their local campuses with that campus’s degree?
That way, the campus gets credit for awarding the degree, while the learners graduate and get into the workforce instead of being frustrated. We would all have to learn to do business a little differently. But, if that is the price for increased flexibility, academic completion for thousands of students in need, and more qualified workers driving the economic recovery, I think it would be a small price to pay.

higher education is an investment, and a darn good one. If we are going to put our money into anything, put it into yourself so then maybe we will have some more thumb people out there than pointer finger people.
Yes, we need to get the mentally advanced, students out of Colleges, and in the work place as soon as possible. Many bright students can learn as they go. Late bloomers are already willing, able and ready to plan for the future, with their visions, and motivation to make it happen…
